Dresses and Jeans

Prom dresses

Prom dresses are ball frocks or gowns worn for a prom. Prom is the shortened form of promenade, and is the conventional dance or assemblage of high school pupils in the United States of America and Canada. It is usually conducted at the end of the academic year of a junior or senior. It is one of the most significant events of high school pupils. A junior of the high school who attends a prom may be called a Junior Prom, whereas senior may be called Senior Prom. The dance can even be a merged one of juniors and seniors.

A Prom Queen and Prom King are selected; these are the titles granted honorary through a school election conducted before the prom. The remaining students are included in a “Prom Court", and this depends on their extracurricular activities in the school. This is usually reserved for seniors. A "Prom Prince" or a “Prom Princess" may also be elected from the juniors. There would also be a "Post Prom”, after the prom, arranged at some restaurants or at the school itself.

The attire of the boys attending a prom can be a formal wear of black and white, no matter at what time the event is conducted. It is at times accompanied with brilliantly colored ties or bow-ties and vests (a garment that covers the upper part of the body). These are available for rent at stores that are open particularly for these wears.

Girls attending a prom usually wear traditional garments. These dresses can be bought from shops specialized for this or through internet shopping or from boutiques. Lot many popular brands sell these prom dresses and novel collections reach the market during every prom season.

Girls also appear pretty by wearing corsages, which are provided according to their dates, and they give a matching floral decoration called a boutonnière for the boys. Corsage is the bouquet of flowers that a woman wears on her garment (pin-on) or close to her wrist, most often during a prom or on her wedding. Sometimes it can even be a nosegay altered such that a girl can carry in her hand. Most preferably, the colors of the corsage should be such that it makes a perfect complement for the prom dress.
The girls also gather at beauty salons for hair dressing, usually in groups, and this is more or less considered a social activity.

Chiffon dresses

Chiffon is a material which is obtained in different shades, flower arrangements, designs etc. Chiffon is the name given to the fabric like velvet, organza and taffeta. Most of the women choose their own chiffon material to make designs of their own creation. Chiffon dresses are also available in the market which you can use especially for party wear or occasional wear. It will give a rich look to your attire and most common chiffon is silk chiffon.

Silk chiffon is very lightweight even lighter than crepe. Usually the finishing of silk chiffon is made by light crepe. Crepe will come under chiffon group fabrics which is made of synthetic material rayon .Rayon crepe is lighter than chiffon but traditional crepe is much heavier than chiffon. Rayon was first developed in France in 1980 and it was called artificial silk. Rayon is also called viscose since it has an inclination to become unstable in water which results in shrinking as well as stretching .Machine wash will cause shrinkage of the fabric.

There are two types of chiffon. One is silk chiffon and other is poly-chiffon. Silk chiffon drapes and cascades down beautifully and with well arranged pleats you will be the limelight of the party. Poly chiffon is polyester made silk chiffon. It also flows and mantles well and the main pros is that it can be maintained and cleaned easily than silk chiffon.

Chiffon though very delicate and soft when maintained well can be worn for worthy occasions. It can be used as an evening gown for parties. These dresses mostly will have length up to ankle and comes with different accents and stitching.

Chiffon is often hand or dry washed according to the label of instructions in the cloth. Poly chiffon can be washed with delicate cycle and cold water in the machine and do with light drying. Let the stains or spills be treated by dry cleaner instantly so as to avoid difficulty in removing it.

The major drawback of chiffon clothing is that they need to be cared well to balance your investment. If you want to keep aside for next event you have to keep it neat and clean. Silk chiffon, being the most delicate of the chiffons should be guarded against the ornaments and handbags that you carry. Earrings should not be dangling and long to cause damage to the fabric. Since it is very easily snag and tear the belt used to buckle ay clothing should be of fabric made and metal belts, buckles need to be avoided. You should also guard against your high heeled shoes which may tear the fabric when the dress got entangled in it
Cocktail dresses

A cocktail dress is a women’s attire which is worn in formal parties and occasions. Christian Dior who was a famous fashion designer in France was the first to coin the word ‘cocktail dresses’ to the formal evening wear in 1940’s.

Since the parties mostly will be held in the evening they are also called evening dress or gown. Some of these dresses will be customized according to the occasion and some will be worn for fashion. There are various sizes and the length of the gown may be up to knee, may also touch the ankle of women. Or it may be ‘tea length’ which is about 2 inches from the ankle. If it touches up to ankle, then it’s ‘ballerina length’ and this ballerina length is quite suitable for evening gown.

Since women wear the dress mainly in a cocktail party, which is a party where drink will be provided first as an appetizer, it is named as cocktail dress. The drink maybe any mixed drink, alcohol, wine like champagne etc.

Cocktail dress also will be worn for semi-formal occasions. Such cocktail dresses were called as ‘late afternoon’ dress in early 20th century. The name came just after the evening dress. Such ‘late afternoon’ dress will be less in richness and luxury when compared to the evening gown.

This ‘late afternoon’ cocktail dress is mostly skirts and professional women opt for it. The idea behind is that, when business suits are worn by men, ladies wear the afternoon skirts or dress suits in order to equalize them to the occasion or when they are in their profession.

After 80’s the dress is valuated by its sumptuousness than length and it is worn to show their wealth. Some of the designers began to categorize the full skirt cocktail dresses as ‘dancing costumes’ in the middle of the 20th century which are suitable especially for formal dances. Another extravagant dance is called ball dance which is popular and to which only ball gowns are worn. Ball gowns are different from evening gowns and will always have strapless top with full flaring skirt and it corresponds to white tie (formal wear for men) which will be worn especially for ball dance ,opera etc.

The cocktail dresses often will be made of luxurious fabric like silk, satin, velvet, chiffon taffeta and comes with various shapes like mermaid, A- line, trumpet, sheath etc. with straps, sleeves or halters. These cocktail dresses correspond to men’s black tie (semi-formal).

Any little black dress (LBD) of women will be considered as cocktail dress and originated in 1920 and considered essential for women as a convention of fashion. Women can use it as business wear with jacket or for evenings along with ornaments.

Black Jeans

Jeans came into existence in America in sixties and by a single decade, jeans became a very popular casual wear in U S. Some of the worlds known brands from ancient times are Levi’s, Wrangler, Lee etc. Jeans are made out of denim, which is cotton threads woven in diagonal manner and yarn woven under two or more twisted thread .Once upon a time jeans were worn only by some sturdy worker groups in America.

Black jeans became common after the world known blue jeans. Blue color of the jeans which is the most traditional among the jeans comes from the Indigo dye that is used for it. Approximately about 20-25 million tons of indigo dyes are generated yearly for the dyeing jeans. Other colors like black, pink, yellow can be achieved by giving dyes to the fabrics. Only a few amount of dye is required for a pair of jeans. ‘Color denim’ otherwise ‘sulphur dyeing’ is used for making jeans black or any other color .Other colors can be achieved with color denim like grey, mustard, pink, rust, green and red.

Jeans comes with various styles and shapes .Blue jeans were a casual wear for American culture which mainly came from the old western part of United States called America Old West.

The disadvantage of black color jeans is that they appear great when they are bought new, but their color gradually fades and it becomes grey colored .But blue jeans will have the rough and tough look even after washing, creating a rustic appearance which is a fashion. In order to keep the black jeans new, purchasing a liquid detergent, turning your jeans inside-out before washing, using gentle cycle of a machine , drying by hanging instead of using dryer, avoiding direct sunlight etc. can be done. Otherwise you can even buy black powdered dye which is not so costly and re-dye your black jeans. However stone washing will be done which is a fashion in 1980’s which involve treating with pumice stone which will give faded worn out appearance.

One of the advantages of black jeans is that it can be worn with formal dress and with white shirt it will appear more suitable for formal occasions. Denim jeans

Denim jeans are trousers made of denim (rugged fabric of cotton). It was Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss who invented American jeans in 1873. Jeans, which became the favorite attire of teenagers, was initially intended for the purpose of working in factories, during 1950s. Levi's, Wrangler, and Lee are some of the popular brands .At present there are a variety of jean models available in the market such as boot cut, flare or skinny.

Though the style of the jeans has evolved much through out these decades, it still remains the favorite casual wear among teenagers and youngsters worldwide .Jeans come in various designs and colors. However, it was blue jeans that were most popular among the Americans.

Denim is a rugged cotton textile (called twill, fabric consisting of diagonal and parallel ribs), in which the weft goes through two or more threads of warp. This brings forth the diagonal ribbing distinctive on the counter side of the fabric. This differentiates denim from cotton duck (called as duck, duck canvas, or duck cloth ordinarily called as "canvas“and is a hefty cotton fabric woven plain).

The word denim originates from that of a sturdy fabric (serge), primitively made in France, in Serge de Nîmes, as how it was called initially, and was shortly called denim. Denim was given blue color using indigo dye in order to make blue "jeans”. The other colors that could be obtained for denim are pink, black, blue, yellow, and white. It was in Genoa, (from which the word “jeans” originates) Italy, that the first denim jeans were made.
Dry denim is the “fade or raw “denim. Unlike the normal denim, which is washed soon after dyeing, dry denim is not, and so gets the fade look , which is usually preferred by wearers as it is natural and unique.

Selvage denim (otherwise the selvedge denim) has a natural edge on the fabric roll that does not ravel out. It is available in the raw or unwashed state. Stretch denim merges an elastic element (usually elastane and mostly up to 3%) into the textile to introduce some degree of stretch in the garments.

There are two types of dyeing for denim: sulphur dyeing and indigo dyeing. Sulfur dyeing is used for giving black and other colors such as pink, mustard, grey, red, and green for denim. Indigo dyeing gives blue and other similar shades to the jeans.

This design was taken for cropped jeans. Cropped jeans are available with tacking, hand sanding etc These cropped shorts can be made as favorite casual wear, pairing with high heels which will give a new look to taller girls which will help in breaking their long frame.
